Indo American Chamber of Commerce
Kolkata, formerly known as ‘Calcutta’, is the capital of West Bengal, and the former capital (1772–1911) of British India. The city is centred on the east bank of the Hooghly River, about 96 miles (154 km) upstream from the head of the Bay of Bengal. A city of commerce, transport, and manufacture, Kolkata is the dominant urban centre of Eastern India.
Fashioned by the colonial British in the manner of a grand European capital, Kolkata has had to assimilate strong European influences and overcome the limitations of its colonial legacy in order to find its own unique identity.
Kolkata is a cosmopolitan city: More than four-fifths of the population is Hindu. Muslims and Christians constitute the largest minorities, but there are some Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists. The dominant language is Bengali, but Urdu, Oriya, Tamil, Punjabi, and other languages also are spoken.
Kolkata’s position as one of India’s pre-eminent economic centres is rooted in its manufacturing industries, its financial and trade activities, and its role as a major port; it is also a major centre for printing, publishing, and newspaper circulation, as well as, for recreation and entertainment. The city is quite frequently referred to as the ‘Cultural Capital of India’. Among the products of Kolkata’s hinterland have been coal, iron, manganese, mica, petroleum, tea, and jute.
For all we know, there seems to be some surprising facts which very few people know about, yet they represent something to be proud of. Given below are a few lesser known facts about Kolkata

Regional President
IACC
East India Council
Respected Members,
It is with a deep sense of honour and commitment that I accept the role of Regional President for the East India Council (EIC) of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce (IACC). I am fully dedicated to upholding our Chamber’s vital mission: strengthening Indo–US economic relations through integrity, foresight, and truly collaborative engagement.
In a global environment defined by rapid change, the India–US partnership continues to stand as a powerful testament to our shared values, resilience, and potential for mutual progress.
Our Key Focus Areas
As we move forward, the East India Council will sharpen its focus on key areas that align with both national goals and the immense scope for bilateral partnership in innovation and responsible enterprise:
Sustainable Business: Actively promoting practices that ensure long-term, socially and environmentally conscious growth.
MSME Competitiveness: Dedicated support for our Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises to boost their global reach and capabilities.
Education and Culture: Fostering deeper ties in these sectors, recognizing that people-to-people connections are the foundation of lasting partnership.
Expanding Our Regional Presence
To enhance our engagement and ensure we serve all members effectively, I am excited to announce our intent to establish two new IACC Desks in Eastern India. These platforms will significantly improve member outreach, encourage vital participation from emerging business communities, and broaden opportunities for collaboration across the entire Indo–US trade ecosystem.
I sincerely look forward to the continued guidance, cooperation, and active involvement of our esteemed members, council representatives, and partners. Together, we will build upon IACC’s proud legacy and ensure the East India Council remains a dynamic, reliable catalyst for bilateral growth and sustainable progress.
