Annual LegalEra IPR Conclave 2013 at Taj Lands’ End, Mumbai on August 02, 2013
Theme: An introduction to the great, good and bad of the Emerging trends in IPR in India - The Upbeat Scenario.
The Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, West India Council supported “The LegalEra Intellectual Property Rights
Conclave”. It serves as a great platform which helps bring together leading international IP practitioners, business
leaders, IP experts and professionals to discuss various challenges faced in the IPR segment.
Hotel Taj Lands’ End, Mumbai, August 02, 2013: The conclave was organized by
LegalEra
along with IACC as a supporting
partner. Critical issues that pose a challenge to business and IP professionals in today’s fluctuating economic landscape
were discussed at length.
The day long conclave saw participation of over 35+ prominent speakers who shared their experiences and knowledge
on a variety of topics which were related to the IP sector.
The chairperson Mr. Pravin Anand, Managing Partner, Anand & Anand gave a special address by discussing important
issues which have come up in the field of patents, trademarks and copyrights. He compared the pros and cons of the
same.
The first session was Tomorrow’s IP- Creation, Innovation & Strategies moderated by Hitesh Barot, Senior IP Counsel &
Vice President Technology Policy, GE India. The panel included prominent speakers like Tabrez Ahmed, Director IP,
Microsoft, Abhayan Jawaharlal, Chief Legal Officer, Cipla Limited, Nilesh Puntambekar, Manger- Innovation & Intellectual
Property, Emerson Innovation, and Komal Shah, Director, InnovarIP,. The panelists shared their views on several aspects
of the discussion at DIPP to formulate National IP strategy.
Summing up on the importance of Right to Publicity - The right to control the commercial use of one’s identity - name,
image and likeness, Mr. Anand Desai, Managing Partner, DSK Legal said “The right of publicity is actually not considered
intellectual property at all. It is however very similar in a number of ways. For example, a famous person or a celebrity
can protect his image, name, reputation because that’s what he earns out of.”
The third session was followed by Madrid Protocol Analysis - Has the World Really Changed After 8th July 2013 and was
moderated by Ranjan Narula, Partner, RNA, Intellectual Property Attorneys. The panelists comprised J. L. N. Murthy,
General Counsel, Red Bull, Himanshu Kane, Managaing Partner, W. S. Kane & Co., Vijayalakshmy Malkani, Manager
Legal, Marico Ltd. The panelists executed an informative session on the Madrid protocol and how much India has and
can contribute to the IP world after the Madrid Protocol.
The next session was on How IPAB Is Increasing Its Power; The Growing Footprints Of IPAB In Indian Jurisdiction – An
Analysis moderated by Khozem Mirza, Joint President (Legal), Aditya Birla Group and the speakers included Mustafa
Motiwala, Senior Partner, Juris Corp., Suja Subramaniam, Managing Partner, Idee IP Consultants, LLP, Dr. Pushpalata
Sarjekar, Senior Manager-IPR, Arch Pharmalabs limited.
The fifth session on Software Patentability - Smartphone Wars At Indian Shore was moderated by Yolynd Lobo, Director,
BSA and the speakers included Gitanjali Bhatnagar, Managing Associate, Anand and Anand, Ashish Chandra, Head - Legal
(Media & Technology), Reliance Industries Limited, Deepak Mehra, Founder, Innovation & IPR Catalyst, Vidurneeti, R.
Lakshminarayan, Senior Manager, IPR Dept., Samsung. They discussed the value of software patents and how is it
impacting India. What are the steps we taking to protect software of Indian minds as also of the big MNC’s approaching
India were also discussed.
The next session was discussed on Patent Litigation & Emerging Trends In Pharma Sector moderated by Arshad Jamil,
AGM Legal, Biocon and the panelist comprised of Suja Subramaniam, Managing Partner, Idee IP Consultants, LLP, Dr.
Charanjit Sehgal, Senior Partner, ANM Global Firm, Dr. Mahendra Thakre, Associate Director - IPM Legal, Dr. Reddy's
Laboratories Limited.
